Although about half of the island's approximately 20,000 inhabitants live here, the capital of Sal Rei has a cozy feel. Several old merchant houses line the square, and the Catholic Church of Santa Isabel, a simple but pretty church with a baroque facade, is dotted with African merchants offering their wares.
The view of the small, offshore island of Ilheu de Sal Rei and the old harbor quay on the Avenida dos Pescadores promenade.
The capital borders the first beautiful beaches in the south: Praia de Estoril, Praia d'Chaves... 10 km of picture-perfect atmosphere, which you should enjoy by walking along the beach and swimming in the sea. There is also a beautiful beach north of Sal Rei called Praia de Cabral.
Povoação Velha, the island's first settlement, established over 500 years ago, is located in the southwest of Boavista. Even without major attractions, the town, with its pastel-colored houses, is worth a visit. The island and São Nicolau are clearly visible from the Rocha Estância viewpoint (354 m). Nevertheless, Povoação Velha is the main transit point on the way to the beautiful beaches of Varandinha and Santa Monica.
East of Boa Vista lies Norte, a cluster of three small villages. Here, the houses still look much as they did 20 or 30 years ago. If you want to experience the authentic Cape Verde, this is the place for you. The boom of mass tourism is still a long way off.
